Special Places
I believe that there are times and places where we experience God’s presence in a special way, places where we feel especially close to God. The Bible is full of examples of people meeting God and communing with Him in special places and in special ways. From Adam to John’s Revelation we see men and women, like ourselves, meeting with and communicating with God in special ways in special places.
Since the late 1960’s that place, for me, has been a rugged rocky outcropping below McGregor Mountain at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Over the years, I have gone there alone or with family members to read the Bible and commune with God. My Bible contains many highlighted and underlined verses with “Estes Park-the Rocks” notated in the margin together with the date I was there. This rocky area is described in chapter 17 of my second novel, “Sell Out”.
The notes in my Bible from these times of reflection and prayer are next to scriptures like 2nd Samuel 22:2-7, the 71st Psalm and Psalm 31:3 just to list a few. I can no longer climb to the top of the highest rock or lift a child to the top, but I can, as I did a little over a week ago, go there and read God’s word and talk with him and feel His presence. I can say with David the king: “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge.” He is “My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge”
Due to my advancing age, my latest visit was probably my last time in this special place. Once again, as I read these verses, I experienced God’s presence. As I sat beneath the great boulders and read, prayed and meditated, I realized again how awesome God is and how much he loves me. These verses are the ones that my fictional hero in “Sell Out”, Wils McCann reads and meditates upon as he experiences the presence of God.
I pray that you have or will find that special place where you can draw close to God and feel His presence in your life. I trust that, through the careful reading of the Bible and quiet meditation on its words, you, like my fictional hero and I, will experience God’s love and assurance as well.
